Ndo to auction medals for Gary O’Neill cancer fund

Sligo beat Drogheda 3-1 in a thrilling FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium, and Ndo’s winner’s medal from that game is one of the three he is generously donating.
The other two are from his career as a Cameroonian international — a World Cup participation medal from 2002 and an African Cup Of Nations Winner’s medal from the same year.
A much less happy medal story is the news that an engraving misprint turned ‘Sligo’ into ‘Silgo’ on the medals handed out to both winners and runners-up at Sunday’s FAI Cup Final.
An FAI spokesperson was quoted yesterday as saying that the matter would be subject to a full review and all the medals replaced.
However, Sligo’s Alan Keane was able to see the funny side of it.
“We only noticed it on the bus on the way back to Sligo,” he said. “Our skipper Danny Ventre was having a look and spotted it: ‘Silgo.’ We got a few laughs out of that. As long as the right words — ‘cup winners’ — are on it we won’t worry too much.”
