Holders Avondale given scare

Last season’s runners-up Avondale United were given a major fright by Carrigaline United in the second round of the Munster Senior Cup before advancing 5-4 after extra-time at Avondale Park on Saturday.

Carrigaline, who are struggling in the First Division, put in a great display in a nine-goal thriller and were unlucky to bow out of the competition.

Avondale’s goals came from Mark O’Sullivan (2), Ray Lally, Ken Murphy and Dave Warren, while Robbie O’Mahony (2), Danny O’Connell and John Donovan scored for the gallant losers.
