The Hawkeye system uses 14 cameras and will send a signal within the space of a second to the referee’s watch and ear-piece indicating that the ball has crossed the line. The first use of the system will take place at the Community Shield match between Manchester United and Wigan at Wembley on Sunday.

The system was unveiled at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium yesterday morning and FA general secretary Alex Horne said: “The object of the game is to put the ball into the goal and the system will help referees to make the correct decision.”
