Keane thanks Galaxy for change of heart

Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane has thanked LA Galaxy after the MLS club granted him permission to play in next Wednesday’s friendly against England.

On Tuesday, the 32-year-old was ruled out of the glamour Wembley clash and the friendly against Georgia in Dublin four days later after his club declined to release him for the fixtures, which fall outside the Fifa international window.

But, the FAI last night confirmed Keane will now be able be available.

“I would like to thank LA Galaxy for reconsidering their decision, after further conversations between us, which really means a lot to me,” Keane said.

“We have reached an agreement that will enable me to make it to the games and I look forward to playing my part.”

Another player hoping to play his part in the end of season friendlies is Richard Keogh.

The Derby County defender made his senior international debut in February, coming on as a late substitute in the 2-0 friendly victory over Poland.

However, the 26-year-old was subsequently overlooked by Giovanni Trapattoni for the World Cup double-header against Sweden and Austria, a decision that, he admits, came as a disappointment.

“I am not going to lie; I was a bit disappointed to have been left out of the previous squads,” said Keogh.

“But it was just one of those things; I thought I did as well as I possibly could when I came on against Poland — it was probably the proudest moment of my career.”

Keogh now hopes to get a chance to add to his international experience.

“It had always been an ambition for me to play for my country and hopefully I will get another opportunity to do just that over the coming weeks.

“Obviously, from a personal point of view it is great that I am in this squad and I am really excited about the upcoming fixtures.

“I am looking to go there, keep my head down and work hard; it is up to me to go and show what I can do and see where it takes me.”
