Duffy awaits Moyes’ verdict on IRA tweet

Shane Duffy will discover today whether his Twitter episode has earned him the wrath of David Moyes.

Duffy awaits Moyes’ verdict on IRA tweet

The Everton defender issued a public apology last week after a tweet from his account on St. Patrick’s night read “UP THE RA”.

Ireland’s U21 skipper claimed his phone was taken on the night out by someone else who transmitted the message on the social media site.

Attempts by the Derry native to explain the situation online failed to stem the backlash he drew.

And, though Everton have backed Duffy’s version of events, Moyes could still opt to discipline the 21-year-old for the incident.

“I don’t know yet what, if anything, will happen from it,” said the centre-back following Monday’s U21 defeat to Portugal in Dundalk.

“I haven’t spoken to him (Moyes) too much yet, only to some people at the club. We’ll probably discuss it when I go back over the next few days.

“Everyone knows it wasn’t me sending those tweets. I’ve apologised for someone using my Twitter.

“He’s taken my phone and it’s got me into trouble. I’ve nothing more to say as it will make more out of it. I’ll just have to deal with it, but it should be sorted soon.”

Asked if he’s learned a harsh lesson to keep his phone on his person in the future, he replied: “Exactly!”

Meanwhile, Duffy insists it’s not his role to try and convince his Toffees colleague Darron Gibson to end his international exile.

While Duffy yearns for a return to the senior set-up which he first occupied as a 17-year-old, his fellow Foylesider has refused call-ups by Giovanni Trapattoni since being left on the bench during last summer’s Euro finals.

“It’s his decision but we all want him back, don’t we?” said Duffy.

“He’s talked to the manager (Trapattoni) recently. I don’t know was said but obviously he doesn’t want to be involved at minute.

“I’m not going to try to get him back. I need to get myself involved first!”
