Bale ‘better than Messi and Ronaldo’

Tottenham captain Michael Dawson believes Gareth Bale is currently the best player in the world.

Bale ‘better than Messi and Ronaldo’

Bale scored his 49th goal for Tottenham on Sunday to help his team to a morale-boosting 2-1 derby win over Arsenal at White Hart Lane. The strike against the Gunners was his 20th of a fine season, which has seen him compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“Gaz is up there with Ronaldo and Messi in terms of ability — he’s one of the best players in the world at the moment, and probably the best in the world for me right now,” Dawson said.

“Some of the things he does would have Ronaldo blush. His goal this season against Norwich where he picked the ball up in his own half and dribbled past all those players before having the calm and composure to put in the bottom corner... he’s been brilliant and credit to him.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal have vowed to ban for life the fan who threw a banana at Bale during Sunday’s match. Police confirmed that they had launched an investigation after Bale was targeted as he went to take a corner in front of the visiting fans in the 27th minute.

Police are examining CCTV footage to see if they can identify the person responsible.

Bale is sometimes targeted by opposing fans, who often chant that the player “looks like a chimp”.

Sunday’s defeat has left Arsenal trailing their great rivals by seven points but they overcame a similar deficit last season and defender Carl Jenkinson remains hopeful he and his team-mates can bridge the gap again this time around.

“I think in a couple of days’ time, we’ll get our head around this and realise that we’ve bridged a gap like that before and can do it again,” he said. Everyone is disappointed we lost. We will be positive and we will come back from this.

“Tottenham are our rivals but we’ll get over it, we’ll be positive. We’ve just got to work our socks off because we need to be in that top four.

“I am confident we can find that consistency. We just have to believe in ourselves for the rest of the season.”
