A stunning Dimitar Berbatov volley on the cusp of half-time was enough to settle a forgettable fixture in which Stoke’s Jonathan Walters saw a second-half penalty saved by Mark Schwarzer.

Costa Rica international Ruiz wants Martin Jol’s side to maintain their momentum for the remainder of the season, with a place in the top half up for grabs.

“We had a difficult period where we had bad results but we were playing not so well,” he said.

“Now we are playing very good and getting the good results so hopefully we can finish the rest of the season playing good and getting the most points we can.

“We did what we had to do yesterday, won, got three points and are looking at the top 10.”

Stoke boss Tony Pulis saw his side come back into the game during the second half and felt they could have gone on to take their second away win of the season if Walters had converted his penalty,

“It was the decisive point,” Pulis said.

“When you get a chance like that you have to score them. If you get the goal, it gives the team more confidence to push on.

“If we’d have taken that chance, you go on and win the game for me. I don’t think we really deserved to lose the game. We need to get a couple of good wins at home and that will give us more confidence.”
