Trap: Number one shirt not a Given but he’s ready if needed

Despite his apparent willingness to come out of international retirement, Shay Given is not in line to automatically resume the number one spot for his country.

Speaking following the announcement of his squad for next month’s friendly against Poland — a 27-man panel in which Given does not feature – Giovanni Trapattoni said he has spoken to the veteran keeper about his determination to move things forward.

“It’s similar to the way I would have explained it to Robbie Keane, that there’s an evolution in the squad and it’s important for us to keep bringing players through,” he said.
