Ozil rescues Real with late heroics

Mesut Ozil’s 89th-minute free-kick rescued a point for Real Madrid from a pulsating 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund to keep both sides on course to qualify from Champions League Group D.

Marco Reus had deservedly put the German champions in front on 28 minutes with a spectacular volley from Robert Lewandowski’s knockdown, but Pepe levelled for the hosts six minutes later with a bullet header from Ozil’s cross.

The visitors went back in front seconds before the break thanks to Mario Gotze’s chip over Iker Casillas that found the net via a deflection off Alvaro Arbeloa, but Madrid were much improved after half-time and finally got level thanks to Ozil’s perfectly placed free-kick.

The draw leaves Dortmund top of Group D with eight points from four games with Real in second on seven, three points clear of Ajax in third, with Man City on just two points.

In Arsenal’s Group B, Olympiacos sent Montpellier crashing out of the Champions League with a 3-1 win in Piraeus.

Paulo Machado put his side ahead after five minutes but Montpellier equalised through a 20th-minute Younes Belhanda penalty.

The Greeks hit the front from Leandro Greco’s volley and Kostas Mitroglou secured the points.

In Group A, Zlatan Ibrahimovic showed his class with four assists as Paris Saint Germain thumped Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 at the Parc des Princes.

The Swede set up the opener for Brazilian defender Alex and set up second-half goals from Blaise Matuidi, Jeremy Menez and Guillaume Hoarau as Zagreb exit the competition, having scored no goals and still pointless.

Dynamo Kiev and FC Porto drew 0-0 in the other match to the leave the Portuguese side on top of the group.

In Group C, injury-plagued striker Alexandre Pato headed a second-half equaliser during another shoddy performance by AC Milan to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Malaga.

The Spanish side had gone ahead five minutes before half-time with a superbly worked goal converted by Eliseu and the half-empty San Siro had become increasingly restless until Pato scored. Nevertheless Malaga stay top of Group C.

Dieumerci Mbokani’s 17th-minute goal gave Anderlecht a 1-0 victory at home to Zenit St Petersburg to keep the Belgians in the qualification hunt.
