Richard Dunne has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifiers against Germany and the Faroe Islands next month.

Giovanni Trapattoni accepted it would be a miracle if Dunne was fit when he put him on stand-by for the games. However, yesterday, Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert was taken aback that Trapattoni even put him on stand-by.

“It is strange him being included in the Ireland squad as he is not playing here at the moment. It is up their manager but I do not know why they have done it.”
