Baraclough wary as Sligo face Dundalk

Sligo Rovers can take another giant step to capturing their first League of Ireland title in 35 years with victory over bottom-side Dundalk in tonight’s top Premier Division game at the Showgrounds (7.45pm).

Six points clear, Sligo are again without the injured Iarflaith Davoren, with manager Ian Baraclough preaching caution with seven games to play.

“We can take nothing for granted and now each match becomes more important as Dundalk are fighting for their lives,” said Baraclough.

Dundalk, now seven points adrift of fellow strugglers Bray Wanderers and UCD, refuse to throw in the towel as they bid to avoid the dreaded promotion-relegation play-off.

“Sligo are champions-elect but we have nothing to lose in this game. Of course it will be difficult — but we will be going all out to cause an upset,” said caretaker Dundalk boss Darius Kierans.

Cork City, on a high after last week’s 1-0 win over Derry City at the Brandywell, should prove too strong for struggling Bray at Turner’s Cross tonight.

Second-placed Drogheda United, a point clear of St Patrick’s Athletic, should keep their hopes alive of a Europa League place next season, with victory at home to Derry City.

Manager Mick Cooke, delighted with his side’s 3-1 win away to UCD last Friday, will be unchanged against a Derry side more concerned about next Friday’s FAI Ford Cup quarter-final at home to Mervue United.

St Pat’s, back in third place, travel to take on Shelbourne at Tolka Park.

Defending champions Shamrock Rovers, 10 points adrift of Sligo, take on Bohemians in another Dublin derby at Tallaght Stadium.

The Hoops will be hoping for a morale-boosting victory before next Friday’s FAI Ford Cup quarter-final away to Shelbourne.
