White strike sends Blues into second spot

With Longford Town not in action until tonight, Waterford had a great chance to put some pressure on the Midlanders and Peter White’s strike just after half-time gave them all three points.

After a dour start, Jacub Tomanica should have given the home side the lead after 16 minutes but missed from close range, while at the other end David Breen was foiled by a good save from James Keane.

Brian Gaffney and Gerry Dolan both had poor attempts from free-kicks for SD Galway just before the half-hour mark and the sides went in scoreless at the break after the defences continued to dominate.

But the Blues took the lead four minutes after the break through White, taking full advantage of SD Galway’s one man deficit, after Nicky Curran had picked up an injury for the home side.

And despite some late pressure from Galway, Waterford picked up their second league win on the bounce to keep their top flight dreams alive.

SD GALWAY: Keane; N Curran (Meehan, 51), Geraghty, Gaffney, Fadden; Harty, Enubele, Dolan (O’Reilly, 67), Conlon; E Curran, Tomanica (Lyons, 70).

WATERFORD UNITED: Holden; Frost, Breen, Long, Mernagh; Higgins (McGrath, 80), Doherty (Coad, 59), Dempsey, Phelan, White; Ryan (Keegan, 81).

Referee: Dave McKeon
