Giovanni Trapattoni might have spotted the potential need for radical surgery, but even though John O’Shea freely accepts there’s room for improvement in the level of the Irish performance, the Waterford man is more inclined to accentuate the positives from the scoreless draw with Hungary on Monday night.

Understandably so, perhaps, since the last warm-up game before the Euros was, for O’Shea, as much about the personal achievement of seeing out the 90 minutes as it was about the result at the end of the night.

“Fourteen games unbeaten is something we’re proud of, but we know as well that we’re going to have to take our chances,” he said.
