McPherson wraps up Saints double

St Eunan’s College of Letterkenny heaped misery on De La Salle, Waterford for the second time in a week at the Oscar Traynor Centre in Coolock yesterday.

The Donegal side were last night celebrating their FAI Schools U15 National Cup title — seven days after beating the Waterford outfit in the U17 decider.

De La Salle dominated the opening half, yet couldn’t pierce a defence superbly marshalled by goalkeeper Rory Carr. Instead, it was the northerners who charged ahead eight minutes into the second half as Kieran McPherson pounced on a defensive mix-up to fire past Stephen Doheny.

The Waterford boys spent most of the last 20 minutes camped inside the opposing half only to find their best efforts foiled by Carr, who saved a ferocious Lee Doherty free-kick before denying Kyle Collins in stoppage time.

In fact, St Eunan’s might have extended their lead late on but Patrick Driver’s angled long-range drive cleared the crossbar by a yard.
