Both sides struggled during a lacklustre opening half and 30 minutes had elapsed when Wexford Youths eventually broke the deadlock with what was their first direct shot on goal.

Having built an attack down the right, a high Dean Broaders cross was only partially cleared, giving Shane Nolan the chance to fire in a low shot from 14 yards that found the bottom right-hand corner of the Galway net.
