Mancini gloom rivalled by doomed Connor
After seeing his side enjoy a day he could not have dreamt of in his wildest dreams, Mancini insisted the title race was still over despite the fact the Premier League crown is back in City’s hands.
Mancini’s men won 2-0 at Wolves after United had been pegged back to an extraordinary 4-4 draw with Everton.
Mind games they may be but Mancini is refusing to put any pressure on his men who do not handle pressure well.
“Only one team can win this,” he said. “I’m standing by what I said. We are still three points behind. We had some pressure today but Wolves wanted to win this game.
“I tell you what I said to my players. We’ve won three games in a row but we’re three points behind. I’m smiling because we can finish well this season.
“We’ve won three games and now we have a derby. We want to play well for our supporters.
“We will talk about one team winning the title on Monday night if we beat them. I probably expect us to lose to Manchester United.
“Their players are used to playing under pressure every year. But we don’t have any pressure as we have no chance of winning.
“We play to win our last three games — sometimes we can, sometimes we can’t. Now is not important to play well, only to win.” Despite goals in each half from Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri, City found the going tough against a Wolves side who were relegated despite a spirited performance.
“I don’t think we played as well as we did against Norwich and West Brom,” added Mancini.
“We only played so so and I’m disappointed. I don’t think we played well. In the second-half for the first 20 minutes we had a problem in the middle. Congratulations to Sir Alex for his season and his title!”
Wolves manager Terry Connor broke down at the post-match press conference as the reality of relegation set in.
“It’s emotion and very raw for the staff, players and supporters of the club,” he said.
“I’ll find the next few days really tough. We need to approach the remaining games in the right manner.
“We’ll be honest and competitive for three more games. We owe it to everyone to finish it off well.
“They’ve given everything over 35 games but it was too difficult. It’s too soon to plan for next season but we’ll sit down with the club at the end of the season.
“I’ve been here 13 years and I cannot put it into words. It’s a real raw emotional tough day for everyone.
“Wolves is a club with a lot of tradition, has had some good times and successes.
“This season will be seen as one of the least successful ones but we’ll be back whoever’s in charge.”
