Avondale United celebrated winning the Munster Senior League Premier Division title in style by qualifying for the second round of the FAI Ford Senior Cup with a 3-1 victory over Sheriff YC at Avondale Park yesterday.

John Cotter’s side secured the league title on Friday night without kicking a ball after Rockmount failed to beat Leeds at Rockmount Park and goals from Eoghan Lougheed, Danny Long and Conor Meade saw them join the League of Ireland big guns in round two.

Douglas Hall and Mayfield United will also be in the hat after defeating Killester United and Ballymun United, respectively, yesterday.

Killian Murphy and Brian Wilkinson scored for The Hall in their 2-1 win at Moneygourney, while Ian Fleming and Stephan Hurley scored as Mayfield won by the same scoreline in Dublin.

In the other first round matches, Glen Crowe was on the scoresheet as Malahide United came back from a goal down to beat College Corinthians 2-1 at Gannon Park. Crumlin United ousted Kilbarrack United 1-0, Phoenix defeated Lucan United 4-3, Cherry Orchard saw off Verona 2-0 and Kildrum Tigers got the better of Clonmel Celtic 1-0.

There were two games in the Munster Senior League Premier Division, where Everton had an important 1-0 victory over Blarney United in their relegation scrap, while Leeds took a point from Rockmount in a 2-2 draw.

There were also two games in the First Division where Fermoy moved into second spot after a 1-0 victory over relegated Ballinhassig, while promotion-chasing Bandon were held 3-3 by the other relegated side Ballincollig.

In the Second Division, CIT replaced Youghal United at the top after hammering Temple United 6-1 as Youghal lost 1-0 at Glasheen.
