UCD win dramatic penalty shoot-out as Maynooth also march on

Mark Langtry kept UCD hopes alive with an equaliser five minutes from time to send their Irish Universities Collingwood Cup first round tie against DCU into extra-time and penalties on the opening day of this years’ competition at UL.

The dramatic penalty shoot-out that settled this enthralling cup tie went the Belfield sides’ way (6-5) after both sides had taken 10 spot kicks each.

DCU went ahead through a fine Mark Logan goal on 35 minutes, the assist coming from a fine Philip Kavanagh cross from the left.

The Glasnevin side had dominated most of the first-half and Stephen Traynor and Mulroy had both gone close before Logan put them ahead.

UCD found their rhythm after the break and after a couple of half-chances, Tyrone McNelis picked out Langtry with a through ball late in the game and the winger ran on to steer the ball past the DCU ‘keeper.

Two goals apiece from Craig Mooney in the first-half and Jamie Airey after the break gave NUI Maynooth a comfortable win over Queens University.

Royal College of Surgeons caused something of a shock by knocking out Dublin University in their first round tie.

The Surgeons frustrated Trinity for most of the game and went ahead on the hour when substitute Eoghan Farrell netted from a Stephen Dredge header at the back post.

Farhad Patel might have levelled near the finish but his well placed header was brilliantly saved by Surgeons man-of-the-match Jamie Clerkin.
