Bayern lose top spot
Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with Hamburg was simply not good enough for a club of their stature, according to midfielder Thomas Muller.
Muller joined the Bavarians’ coach Jupp Heynckes in saying the draw, which saw Bayern lose top spot in the Bundesliga this weekend, was a major setback in their hopes of winning the title this season.
“When you are at FC Bayern, you have always got to win,” said Muller.
“Especially when you want to win the league, you have got to win a lot of matches.
“That is why this draw really annoys me because it was a game which had a lot more in it for us. It just disappoints you, angers you, but at the same time, you cannot say we played a bad game.”
Third-placed Schalke also wasted the chance to go level on points with Dortmund as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Mainz.
Mainz’s new signing Mohamed Zidan marked his debut with a goal as he put the away side ahead in the 15th minute, but Chinedu Obasi’s first goal for the Royal Blues earned them a draw.
And it proved a very good day for defending champions Dortmund with fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach also failing to win.
Their goalless draw at Wolfsburg left them one point behind Bayern and Schalke.
Yesterday, Cologne won 1-0 at 10-man Kaiserslautern while bottom club Freiburg twice came from behind to claim a valuable point at home to European contenders Werder Bremen.
