United’s title charge back on track, says Fergie

ALEX FERGUSON insisted Manchester United’s bid to retain the Premier League title remains on course after yesterday’s victory at Queens Park Rangers.

The 2-0 win – secured on the back of goals from Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick gave United another three points and Ferguson is confident his team is on target to enter the new year amongst the leading group.

“The important thing is to be there on New Year’s Day,” Ferguson said. “If you’re involved right at the top part then you know the second half of the season, we’ll relish that.”

The victory was United’s second successive league win after their Champions League exit and Ferguson believes the club is already looking forward.

“It was a disappointment,” he said. “We have always had to recover. We are not immune to losing a game. Obviously we don’t want to lose big ones but in the nature of our club we put it down as another day in the history of Manchester United.

“We get on with it — we don’t sit and moan about it. We have to do something about it and I think the players have done that.”

He added: “We could’ve scored a lot of goals today and if you said before the game, ‘Would you take 2-0?’, of course we would.

“But on the evidence of today, we should’ve scored a lot of goals. The one good thing that comes out of today, Queens Park Rangers in their home games have been a real problem to a lot of teams.

“But we kept them quiet for most of the game and we played some terrific football at times, and I’m pleased with that.”

Ferguson singled Carrick out for praise after the midfielder ran 50 yards to score. “He’s supposed to sit in the middle of the pitch. I might have to fine him,” he joked.

“But he’s bang on form, Michael — he’s been terrific in the last few weeks and I’m really pleased.”

QPR manager Neil Warnock was more impressed by Rooney, however.

“Wayne Rooney was different class,” the manager said. “You don’t realise how good he is until you see him live. He hardly gave a ball away. I think they were disappointed with him today, but you get punished, don’t you.

“The two goals were sloppiness in midfield, two square passes they intercepted, and we were punished.”
