Confused Spurs twits target hero Hoy

ONE is a four-time Olympic champion and a face of the 2012 Games and the other a Premier League referee — but it appears some football fans are having trouble telling them apart.

Cyclist Chris Hoy revealed yesterday he has been on the receiving end of insulting Twitter messages fromTottenham supporters who have mistaken him for Chris Foy.

Foy was in charge of Spurs’ 2-1 Premier League defeat at Stoke on Sunday, when the visitors had an Emmanuel Adebayor goal wrongly ruled out for offside, two penalty appeals for handball turned down and Younes Kaboul harshly sent off.

One of those to get the pair’s identities mixed up, @chutneymutt, tweeted: “Chris Hoy, not only are you a useless **** of a referee, you also support Stoke.”

@JohnnyJ_Smyth posted: “Robbed ! Chris hoy calls himself a premier league referee ! £mug.”

Hoy, who won three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, was forced to defend himself, saying: “Just for the record 1) I don’t need glasses and 2) I do not lead a double life as an English premiere league ref. That’s Chris Foy.”

He continued to protest his innocence, adding: “Still getting some rather amusing grief from Spurs fans! On the plus side I’ve learned some new 4 letter words today. £FoyNotHoy.”

Meanwhile, former Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate expects his old club to mount a serious title challenge — but is not dwelling on what might have been.

Woodgate was released by the Londoners in the summer after three-and-a-half injury-plagued years at White Hart Lane.

The club opted not to retain the 31-year-old because of the cost of insuring him and he was later offered the chance to resurrect his career with Stoke. Woodgate was disappointed at the club’s decision but does not hold a grudge.

“There’s no animosity between me and anyone at Spurs,” said Woodgate, who shone against his old teammates at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.

“I think they’ll go close to winning the league, if not this year, then next year. “I get on with my game and I know Harry Redknapp believes in me, so no problem. I didn’t want to leave and he didn’t want me to either. But that’s life — you’ve got to get on with it. You move on.”
