A MONTH ago, before Ireland had played their final two games in the Euro 2012 qualifying group, John Delaney was asked on Newstalk’s Off The Ball show if he thought Giovanni Trapattoni’s conservative tactics were a factor in poor attendances at the Aviva Stadium.

“I think it’s the economy and the team haven’t been as successful as people would like,” replied the FAI boss.

“The style of play isn’t the most attractive to watch but if you love your country, you come and watch your team play. We all love to see beautiful football but Jack [Charlton] played in a very raw way. If we’re successful, I think the country will come with it.”
