Promotion hopes at stake at the Cross as Monaghan face City

FOR promotion contenders they might all be important games at this late stage of the First Division season but, even so, there’s a real six-pointer look about tonight’s meeting of Cork City and Monaghan United at Turner’s Cross (7.45pm).

Monaghan’s victory over leaders Shelbourne on Friday cut the gap at the top to four points and also left Roddy Collins’ side one point clear of Cork with a game in hand. With two automatic promotion places up for grabs, the significance of tonight’s meeting of second and third won’t be lost on anyone.

“We are at a point in the season where it is about winning games, and that is what we will be trying to do,” said City boss Tommy Dunne. “Games between ourselves and Monaghan have been tight affairs and I’d expect this game to be the same. We’re looking forward to the game, we are in good form and we are scoring goals, so we will be positive and look to get the win.”
