Ronaldo on mark again as Ajax are dismissed
After opening with a laboured 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb, Jose Mourinho’s men looked more in the mood last night and eased to the three points thanks to goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.
With 25 minutes on the clock the hosts went ahead, Benzema delivering a perfect cross for Ronaldo to tuck home.
Ajax conceded again four minutes before the break.
Xabi Alonso fired a long ball down field for Ronaldo to tee up Kaka, and the Brazilian showed all of his class as he fired home low into the right corner.
And on 49 minutes Benzema made it three after Kaka returned the favour.
Goals by Bafetimbi Gomis and Bakary Kone guided Lyon to victory as they consolidated second place in Group D with a highly-impressive performance against Dinamo Zagreb.
Gustavo Colman’s 75th-minute penalty maintained Trabzonspor’s lead at the top of Champions League Group B as they drew 1-1 with Joe Cole’s Lille.
Moussa Sow had put the French side ahead on 31 minutes but the Turks hit back through Colman’s strike.
Claudio Ranieri continued his winning start to life as Inter Milan manager with a 3-2 victory at CSKA Moscow.
Lucio gave Inter a sixth-minute lead and Giampaolo Pazzini doubled the lead midway through the first half, before Alan Dzagoev and Vagner Love levelled the scores.
However, substitute Mauro Zarate blasted in the winner 11 minutes from time.
In Manchester City’s Group A, a goal from Marik Hamsik and a penalty from Edinson Cavani gave Napoli a 2-0 win over Villarreal, building on the point they earned at the Etihad.
In Manchester United’s Group C, Bruno Cesar’s 40th-minute goal gave Benfica an away win at Romanian side Otelul Galati.
