Meyler makes a winning return
The Irish midfielder came off at half time as planned having impressed with an energetic display in his first appearance in eight months.
Meyler later tweeted: “Thanks to everyone for all the texts, messages, tweets everything its really appreciated. I couldn't have made the comeback without all this support or the love and inspiration of my family. Thank You all.’’
Last night’s appearance was a significant milestone for the 22-year-old given that he has not featured since damaging knee ligaments in Sunderland’s game against Aston Villa in January, just a month after making his comeback from the same injury.
Both injuries were career threatening but Meyler, who spent a month in Vermont in June as part of his rehabilitation, has battled back bravely and will now hope his injury problems are behind him. Meyler’s return to action will be a big boost to boss Steve Bruce who has come under pressure after Sunderland’s stuttering start to the season.
