WIGAN manager Roberto Martinez has dismissed claims that talks with James McCarthy have broken down and insisted the Republic of Ireland midfielder will sign a new contract with the Latics.

Chelsea, Arsenal and in recent days recent Liverpool have been linked with the 20-year-old. McCarthy, who on Tuesday was named in Giovanni Trapattoni’s final 25-man Republic of Ireland squad for next Wednesday’s friendly against Croatia, still has three years on his present deal but Martinez said talks over a new improved deal are ongoing and claimed “there will be a successful resolution” to the negotiations.

“Not at all, no, no,” replied Martinez when asked if there was a contract impasse.
