After Preston’s relegation from the Championship it was inevitable St Ledger would be on the move and he was linked with a number of clubs before the Foxes won the chase for his signature.

St Ledger joins Leicester on a three-year deal to become manager Sven-Goran Eriksson’s fourth signing of the summer as he seeks to build a team that can challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

With that in mind, the former England manager is delighted with his latest addition.

“I am very pleased that Sean will be joining us. He expressed a real desire to play for Leicester City and I believe that he will have a positive impact here at the club,” Eriksson told Leicester’s website.

“Sean is a very good defender and has proven this in league football, but also on the international stage for the Republic of Ireland.

“He fits the profile of hungry players, eager to impress and work hard for their place.

“He is strong and is a reliable defender. I am certain that alongside our other new signings, he will help to improve our team.”

A regular in the Ireland side since making his international debut two years ago, St Ledger’s reputation has soared in recent seasons.

Preston’s Player of the Year in 2008, St Ledger played exactly 200 games for the Lancashire club, but was ruled out of last season’s run-in through injury as the Lilywhites were relegated to League One.

Meanwhile former Cork City defender Alan Bennett has joined League Two Cheltenham Town on a one-year deal, with the option of a second year.

The former Ireland international, 29, was released by Wycombe at the end of last season. He said: “After speaking to the boss on Friday, it felt like the right thing for me to do.

“I had a good offer from a club in Ireland but I felt like I wanted to stay here.”
