On Saturday night, RTÉ ranked Giovanni Trapattoni’s team third behind Slovakia and Russia at the top of table, based on the results of head-to-head matches between the three teams currently tied on 13 points. At the same time Sky Sports reported that Ireland were leading the group, having scored more goals than Russia, with both teams enjoying a superior goal difference to Slovakia.
