Much the better team for large spells and enjoying the clearer goalscoring chances, Ireland still couldn’t find a way past Portugal’s Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and it ultimately cost them.

Just as the match at the Estádio Municipal de Águeda seemed destined for stalemate, Portugal substitute Abel advanced from midfield and unleashed a shot from 30 yards which rose high into the top corner of Michael Quirke’s goal.
