Pandev gunning for an upset
Macedonia go into the game in fifth place in Group B and Pandev has told his team-mates that a defeat to Ireland will end their hopes of competing at Poland-Ukraine next summer.
Pandev, who was passed fit to play despite hobbling off with a leg injury in his last match for Inter Milan, looked sharp in training yesterday morning.
âWe are not stronger than Russia, Slovakia or Ireland, but we have shown in the past that we can compete against strong European opposition,â said Pandev.
âWe know that a defeat all but ends our chances of qualifying. That is why we must believe in ourselves and our ability to win in Dublin. Ireland play solid football and are physically strong â but we have nothing to lose. We believe in our ability and must not contemplate defeat.â
Coach Mirsad Jonuz has given each of his players specific instructions on their direct opponents. âAll the players will have special assignments, even Goran Pandev,â he said.
âWe will try to play a bit differently compared to the last few games. We are well aware that tactical details will be crucial in this game. Iâve watched Ireland against Russia and Wales and they are still playing long ball. They line up in a 4-4-2 formation that transforms to 4-2-4 when they attack. They are most dangerous between the 60th and the 75th minute, when they usually score. We need to keep the ball and be tough.â
The only injury doubt to come out of yesterdayâs training session was full-back Aleksandar Lazevski, who suffered a back injury. He will be assessed today.
