Domestic chores next on Terry’s Blues to-do list

JOHN TERRY has ordered his Chelsea team-mates to build on their desperately-needed Champions League win at FC Copenhagen by chasing down Tottenham and Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League.

And the Blues captain also wants his side to give Manchester United the jitters in their quest to depose Carlo Ancelotti’s men as English champions by beating the leaders at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, insisting they “not invincible” and could yet bottle it.

Terry acknowledges the chances of Chelsea completing one of the great comebacks in the championship are “really small”. Yet, he is well aware 12-point leads have been frittered away before, not least by United themselves in 1998, as well as by Newcastle two years earlier.

“It’s been done. Man United did it to Newcastle many years ago,” the England defender said.

“It’s possible and a little bit of pressure...”

The champions slumped to fifth in the Premier League after taking one point from their last two games but with Spurs having lost at Blackpool, they will regain fourth if they beat United next week.

England defender Terry believes the Blues’ trophy-winning experience will give them the edge in the race for third and fourth place, saying of Tottenham and City: “At times, they look very good but are slipping up like we all are at the moment.

“And when teams like Tottenham and Man City do slip up, it’s down to us to capitalise on that.

“We have got an awful lot of experience, a lot of trust in each other and belief that we can still do it.”

Terry believes they can sow the seeds of doubt in the minds of their perennial title rivals Manchester United by beating them in what he termed a “must-win” game.

“If we want to put in a charge and a run for the Premier League, we must beat Man United,” Terry said. “A draw’s no good and, obviously, losing no good at all.”

Terry agreed with manager Ancelotti that United would be facing a Chelsea side now boasting a forward line to be feared all over Europe.

Nicolas Anelka bagged a double on Tuesday, Fernando Torres showed up well despite not scoring and with Didier Drogba also laying in wait on the bench, Terry reckons it bodes well for the Blues.

“To play against them must put the fear into defenders,” he said. “Hopefully this is the start of them all clicking together.” He added of Torres: “The only thing that was missing from his performance (against Copenhagen) was a goal. “It would’ve been very nice for him, but he played a massive part in our performance.”
