Shakhtar rock in Roma
The result piles further pressure on Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, whose team went into the game on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Napoli and 5-3 loss at Inter Milan.
After a bright start last night, Roma went in front when Rodrigo Taddei’s cross towards the far post found Simone Perrotta and his powerful header got a touch from Shakhtar defender Razvan Rat before finding the back of the net.
Roma’s joy was short lived as Alexander Doni could do nothing to stop Jadson’s right-footed strike from the edge of the area which was deflected into the back of the net by Daniele De Rossi.
Shakhtar then went in front when Jadson found Douglas Costa and his curled left-footed effort from the edge of the area beat Doni.
Things only got worse for Roma when Jon Arne Riise’s slip allowed Douglas Costa to feed Luiz Adriano and the Brazilian made no mistake.
Roma’s players were booed by the home fans at the Olympic Stadium as they came out for the second half but Ranieri’s men showed more determination and reduced the deficit in the 61st minute.
Jeremy Menez got behind Perrotta’s headed pass and fired into the top right corner to beat Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.
Roma desperately surged forward as the clock ran down in search of the equaliser and almost found it eight minutes from time, but Francesco Totti’s right-footed shot was kept out by the Shakhtar goalkeeper.
