WEST BROM may have denied speculation Chris Hughton is poised to become their next manager, but the former Republic of Ireland international is still expected to be confirmed as Roberto Di Matteo’s replacement.

The former Newcastle boss has held talks with the West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace but won’t be in charge for tomorrow’s crucial home clash with fellow strugglers West Ham.

That task has already been given to the club’s first-team coach Michael Appleton, who believes he can land the job full-time despite the fact bookmakers have suspended betting on the identity of the next permanent Baggies boss.
