ON his first public appearance in Ireland since undergoing surgery just after Christmas, Giovanni Trapattoni looked in robust health as he named his latest Irish squad at the Aviva Stadium yesterday.

True, the veteran Italian did speak in a distinctly hoarse voice but he insisted that this was due to a cold rather than a remnant of the carotid artery surgery which had initially given rise to erroneous reports in Italy that he’d suffered a stroke.

And when asked yesterday how he was feeling, Trapattoni smiled and replied: “101% good!”
