Anderson relishes role as title favourites

MANCHESTER UNITED go into their first top flight visit to Blackpool in 40 years with an air of confidence tomorrow, knowing a win will push them five points clear in the Premier League.

Anderson relishes role as title favourites

Little wonder midfield dynamo Anderson is so convinced about their title credentials.

“We should definitely be considered favourites for the title,” he said.

“We are all happy with how things are going. We are top of the league, with games in hand. That is an amazing position.

“I know we haven’t always played well but if we perform badly and still win the game then that is a good three points as far as I am concerned.

“It is nice to play attractive football but it is even better to win games.”

United will be bolstered by the return of Anderson’s Brazilian compatriot Rafael from suspension at Bloomfield Road, although Rio Ferdinand’s participation depends upon his recovery from the groin injury that kept him out of Saturday’s game.

Alex Ferguson meanwhile has challenged his front men to follow Dimitar Berbatov’s path to 20 goals this season.

Ferguson knows that either Berbatov must continue at his present rate or his team-mates must start helping out.

With Wayne Rooney stuck on three, two of which came from the penalty spot, the same number as Ryan Giggs, Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher, Javier Hernandez and Nani are the closest to Berbatov with nine and eight respectively.

“Dimitar is getting up towards that 20-goal mark, which is going to be important for us,” Ferguson said.

“The other players sense it too. They are playing their part in playing with him.”

Apart from his goals, Berbatov’s link play has been excellent.

The teamwork with Rooney to set up the Giggs goal was impressive, as was the Nani goal, even if the Portugal winger frustrated his team-mates with his growing number of wayward attempts.

“Eventually” was Ferguson’s one-word assessment of the wide-man’s eighth goal of the season.
