Andy King capitalised on a second half-error by England goalkeeper Joe Hart to earn the Foxes a second chance at Eastlands.
It was no more than they deserved and Roberto Mancini’s side struggled to cope with the aerial threat of Leicester newcomer Sol Bamba.
Former Eastlands boss Eriksson said: “I must be pleased with the performance and it was a good football match. I’m very proud of my players and they should be proud of their display. We stood up to Manchester City, one of the best teams in the country. All the players were brilliant.’’
King’s goal came after James Milner and Carlos had scored to cancel out Bamba’s early opener.
Eriksson signed Bamba from Hibernian in midweek but was already aware first hand of his qualities.
He said: “Sol Bamba is very dangerous at set-pieces, I knew that from when I was in charge of the Ivory Coast for the World Cup. He scored in a practice match and that was when I saw how good he can be. I hope he continues to perform like that for the rest of the season.”
Eriksson insists he has no bad feeling towards City, who replaced him with Mark Hughes.
Foxes midfielder Richie Wellens confirmed his hand was stamped on by Nigel de Jong, but does not believe it was a deliberate act.
“He had a little stamp on the hand. I don’t think it was deliberate. I hope it wasn’t, but you’ve just got to take the bumps and bruises. He didn’t say anything. Just a little smile,’’ said Wellens.
Mancini refused to criticise Hart for the mistake.
“Has he said sorry? Yes, but his save in the first half and in other games were good. This can happen, it was unlucky.”
Mancini conceded that Leicester, who scored inside 50 seconds through Bamba, deserved a replay.
He said: “I think that is a good result for both teams. Leicester played very well. They did not deserve to lose this game.’’
