Some reports had suggested that the former England boss would face the sack if Die Wolfe were beaten by Cottbus, and their 3-1 defeat on home soil will do the 49-year-old no favours.
A first-half brace from Nils Peterson and a goal from Shao Jiayi gave Cottbus a commanding interval lead and, although in-demand Edin Dzeko pulled one back for Wolfsburg after the break, it was not enough.
