IRELAND striker Kevin Doyle is expected to make a swift return to action from the injury which ruled him out of tonight’s European championship qualifier with Slovakia.

Doyle was assessed by club medics at Wolves yesterday who found that the Wexford man “suffered an irritation to his knee” in Friday’s 3-2 loss to Russia.

Manager Mick McCarthy is hopeful his €7.6m striker will be fit to lead the line on Saturday against West Ham. McCarthy will also be monitoring the progress of another Republic of Ireland international, Stephen Hunt, who plays his first competitive game of the season for the reserves against Wigan tonight in Telford.
