Given looks all set for return to action with City

The 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been absent from Roberto Mancini’s side since dislocating his shoulder against Arsenal towards the end of last season. But the shot-stopper is now hoping to resume his role as No 1 for the Blues — either in Atlanta or in Saturday’s clash with Inter Milan.

“I have not spoken to the manager yet but I am hoping to play a part in the game against Club America and if not then at the weekend,’’ Given, who has been named the Ireland squad for the friendly with Argentina said.

“I feel sharp and full of optimism for the season ahead and can’t wait to get into a game situation.’’

Meanwhile, new Ireland U21 coach Noel King has announced an 18-man squad to play Estonia in a European Championship qualifier on 10 August in the Tallaght Stadium.

Included in the squad are a number of senior fringe players such as James McCarthy, Anthony Stokes and Seamus Coleman, while Cillian Sheridan will transfer to the senior squad after the match.

Republic of Ireland U21 squad: S Henderson, S Redmond, S Coleman, L Oyebanjo, B Moloney, E Nolan, G Gunning, R Kiernan, O Garvan, C Clifford, A Judge, S Gleeson, J McCarthy, C Hourihane C Sheridan, A Stokes, A Doran, J Mason.
