World Cup thief foiled at Soccer City

A PITCH invader tried to steal the World Cup just minutes before last night’s final kick-off at Soccer City, Johannesburg.

World Cup thief foiled at Soccer City

The famous golden trophy, right, was on display by the side of the pitch prior to the climactic match of the 2010 tournament when the fan ran onto the pitch and tried to grab it as part of an apparent anti-racism protest.

Security stepped in to stop the trophy being grabbed with just seconds to spare, and the fan — sporting a red two-pronged hat and wearing a dark blue t-shirt bearing the words “Salta Salta Jimmy Jump Against racism” — was swiftly removed from the stadium.

He was carried away by seven security men just as the Dutch and Spanish teams were about to walk on to the pitch for the national anthems and the start of the game.
