Capello defends decision to withdraw Rooney

WAYNE ROONEY will see the England doctor today to ascertain the extent of an ankle injury that saw him substituted against Slovenia, but England are confident he will be fit to face Germany in the last 16 on Sunday.

England manager Fabio Capello defended his decision to take off the Manchester Untied striker who had yet again failed to hit top form.

The last straw came when Rooney missed a simple chance to put England 2-0 ahead, hitting the post when completely through on goal.
