Keane expects Spurs return

REPUBLIC of Ireland captain Robbie Keane yesterday revealed he is almost certain to return to Tottenham this summer.

The Dubliner scored his 16th goal in 19 games since arriving on loan in January as Celtic finished their season on a winning note by beating Hearts 2-1.

Keane’s first-half opener had been cancelled out by Jambos skipper Marius Zaliukas before a wonderful volley by Chinese midfielder Zheng Zhi on the hour mark gave Neil Lennon the perfect end to his time as interim manager.

Keane said: “I’m a Tottenham player aren’t I? I’ve got a contract with Tottenham so I will be back there unless someone tells me different. I don’t want to be disrespectful to Tottenham, I’ve got a contract there so as far as I’m concerned I will be back there. I’m delighted with my goal, obviously, that’s why I’m here, to score goals. I’m judged on scoring goals and I’m happy with my performance.’’

Meanwhile Celtic have announced the process of appointing a new manager is formally under way.

Bhoys chairman John Reid issued a statement in which he revealed the club had delayed making a decision on who should replace Tony Mowbray until Lennon had been given the opportunity to prove his own credentials.

Reid said: “On behalf of the Celtic board and supporters, I want to extend my thanks to Neil Lennon and his team for taking on the daunting challenge of completing the SPL season and for the way in which this was done.

“The board will now turn to the formal process of considering the appointment of a new manager.

“This is a big and important decision, and will require a thorough consideration.”

Elsewhere Hibernian pipped Motherwell for fourth place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League to secure European football thanks to a 2-0 win at Dundee United.
