ROBERTO MARTINEZ has put Wigan Athletic’s survival down to the darkest day of their season – the 9-1 drubbing at Tottenham in November.

That result saw his side concede eight goals in the second half but was, according to the Spaniard, perhaps the turning point in his first season in charge of the club.

“You are going to get freak moments and that was a football accident because we conceded eight goals in 40 minutes,” he said. “Believe me, in the Premier League to get beaten 9-1 affects you every day.
