‘Scapegoat’ McGlynn to appeal ban for betting

GARETH McGLYNN confirmed he will be appealing the FAI disciplinary commitee’s decision to ban him for two months for placing bets on League of Ireland games – in which his own club at the time was not involved – while playing for Derry City.

The Bohemians midfielder, who has always insisted that he had made what he describes as a genuine mistake, has expressed astonishment at the ruling.

“I am absolutely amazed at the decision,” he says. “The disciplinary committee have fully accepted that I was not aware that I was breaching the rule and yet they have punished me with a huge ban which could mean missing as many as 10 matches. It makes no sense to me whatsoever.
