FAI will still run Cork-Celtic game

FAI chief executive John Delaney has confirmed that the FAI will still be running the forthcoming Cork City v Glasgow Celtic friendly game, even though the club has already paid its debt to the Revenue Commissioners.

The FAI had originally committed to running the game when the club had yet to settle its tax liability but, now that it has done so, the proceeds of the game will instead go to the mystery benefactor – believed to be a London-based businessman – whose willingness to bail out the club at the 11th hour meant that it survived a winding-up order in the High Court.

“We’re still running the Celtic game,” said Delaney yesterday. “And the proceeds will go to the person who paid the money to pay the Revenue. Whatever profits are made out of that game, we will collect the monies and hand it over to the individual. We gave that in writing to the individual.”
