Ancelotti exit paves way for Chelsea move

CARLO ANCELOTTI is being widely tipped to be named Chelsea manager in the next few days after confirming his exit from AC Milan by “mutual consent” – and he has admitted he would like to make Kaka his first signing.

The 49-year-old left the Rossoneri after over seven years in charge following a 2-0 win at Fiorentina yesterday which secured third in Serie A and a place in the group stages of the Champions League.

Ancelotti, who twice made Milan European champions, is now set to be named as Guus Hiddink’s replacement at Stamford Bridge for next season even if he insists his next posting has not been confirmed.

As Ancelotti looks set for Stamford Bridge, Milan have moved quickly, appointing Leonardo as his replacement. Club vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed former AC Milan and Brazil playmaker Leonardo, who has been working for the club as technical area activities manager, will be his successor.

Galliani said: “Leonardo is our new coach and will be presented at the San Siro tomorrow (Monday) at midday.”

Parting coach Ancelotti, meanwhile, said: “I have had eight great years here and I want to thank everybody who has been with me over these years.” Ancelotti continued to claim his next move was not decided but ruled out staying in Serie A.

“I am certainly not staying in Italy,” he added. “But it is not certain that I am going to London for sure either.”

Wherever he does go he would like to take Kaka with him. But he admitted the Brazilian was unlikely to follow. “There is one player I would like to take, but I cannot take him with me,” he said.

And if his destination is Chelsea, he will find a team in buoyant mood after winning the FA Cup, and Ancelotti took his hat off to the man he would replace in London.

“Hiddink is one of the coaches I respect the most and I am happy that he did a great job with Chelsea,” he said.

Ancelotti wasn’t the only departure at the San Siro yesterday. David Beckham left and could not commit to a possible return date. For now, he returns to the Los Angeles Galaxy to conclude the Major League Soccer season, but he still has his heart set on returning to the Serie A club.
