HAMILTON’S rising star James McCarthy last night committed his international future to the Republic of Ireland following overtures from Scotland to the player.

The Scottish FA held talks with the 17-year-old midfielder and his club, while Scotland assistant coach Terry Butcher admitted his interest in the player, who qualifies for Ireland through his Donegal grandfather.

But last night the FAI announced McCarthy, who has played for Ireland up to Under-21 level, had reaffirmed his commitment to the boys in green.
