IT WAS symptomatic of Alex Ferguson’s approach to his job that immediately after securing his 10th Premier League title, the Scot’s thoughts quickly turned towards the Champions League final on May 21, when he believes his current Manchester United side can establish themselves as his best ever if they can beat Chelsea and complete a memorable double.

Ferguson, who refuted any suggestions he might retire if he duly adds a second European Cup to his latest league victory, was understandably upbeat and believes the experience of having just pipped Avram Grant’s side to the domestic title will give his team a major advantage when the thrilling, two-way battle between the two clubs finally concludes in 10 days time.

“We are bouncing into the Champions League final,” he said. “If we had lost the title today, it would have been difficult. When we lost the title at West Ham, we went into the FA Cup final and we were dead. But we are not dead this time — we are alive.
