Kelly blasts Rico axe but endorses Mathews for City

SEAN KELLY yesterday joined the chorus of Cork City players who have come out strongly against the decision to end Damien Richardson’s tenure at the club — while also endorsing potential replacement Alan Mathews.

General manager at the Leeside club, Aidan Tynan, may be waiting to see if Bohemians will today choose Mathews or the current favourite, Pat Fenlon, to fill the Dalymount vacancy.

However, former Arsenal reserve Kelly yesterday backed the front runner for the City job, having worked under him briefly while representing Ireland’s U-23 side in October, saying Mathews was a manager who he’d be happy to ‘‘recommend’’.
