Trotters progress to last 32

BOLTON’S passage to the UEFA Cup last 32 was confirmed last night after the unlikely combination of results needed to eliminate them failed to materialise.

The Trotters had completed their Group F campaign two weeks ago but faced an anxious wait as the remaining teams played their final matches.

Knowing they were safely through unless Bayern Munich drew with Aris Salonika and Braga beat Red Star Belgrade by two goals, Bolton need not have worried as Bayern thrashed Aris 6-0 to win the group.

Luca Toni netted four times before Christian Lell and Philip Lahm completed the rout.

Braga did not do enough to relegate Bolton to third in the group, Roland Linz and Wenderson Wender scoring in a 2-0 win over Red Star.

Tottenham, who had already qualified after completing their Group G programme two weeks ago, lost top spot after Getafe beat Anderlecht 2-1.

Hernandez Pablo and Fabio Celestini scored for the hosts before Cyril Thereau netted a stoppage-time consolation.

Anderlecht survived elimination after AaB won 3-1 at Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Kasper Risgaard put the visitors ahead before Fabio Junior levelled on the stroke of half-time.

But a Michael Jakobsen penalty and Tomas Enevoldsen gave the Danes their only win in the group.

Galatasaray snatched the final Group H qualifying spot after Panionios threw away a two-goal lead against Bordeaux. That meant Galatasaray’s 0-0 draw against Austria Magna was good enough to edge them through on goal difference.

Group E, which had already seen qualification matters resolved before tonight, saw Bayer Leverkusen snatch top spot with a 5-0 win at FC Zurich.
